Hope for Future: bakery in the slums of Korogocho

Three years ago it was little more than a vision, now it is a reality: Hope for Future has now set up the "Angel Bakery" in partnership with backaldrin in the slum neighbourhood of Korogocho in Nairobi, Kenya.

This bakery is opening up new opportunities for the inhabitants of Korogocho, so it is no surprise that a huge number of people attended the opening to celebrate the first batch of freshly baked bread.

The newly established Angel Bakery brings with it new jobs, and, in turn, prospects for the future for many people in Korogocho. The Upper Austrian company backaldrin was keen to contribute its expertise in the bakery trade towards the project’s success. Young people will learn the craft of the baker at the Angel Bakery, which will also serve as a fully functioning commercial operation, primarily by supplying schools with fresh bread.

After all, Hope for Future has set itself the objective of providing a future for children, families and the elderly in two of Nairobi’s slums: Kariobangi and Korogocho. As well as the Angel Bakery, they have also set up three schools, the Acakoro football academy and a social health centre.

With its headquarters in Asten, Upper Austria – also the site of the company’s largest production site – backaldrin is the producer of over 600 bread, bakery and pastry products. Further production facilities are located in Cape Town (South Africa), Amman (Jordan), Winterthur (Switzerland) and Toluca (Mexico). The family business, run by Peter Augendopler, has over 850 employees worldwide and currently exports baking ingredients to over 100 countries. The company is also the original creator of the Kornspitz® baking mixture.
