Orders from The Hague for new Avenio-Tramway

Siemens-Division Rail Systems is executing at its factory in Vienna a huge contract for public transport operator HTM in The Hague. End of 2011 HTM ordered 40 sets of 100-percent-low-floor-trams of the type Avenio. Delivery started in summer of 2014. In March 2014 HTM converted an option for 20 additional tram sets into another fixed order.

The Siemens Rail Systems Division is an international leader in providing rolling stock and related services. The company is one of the biggest suppliers in the market for tramways. At this point in time approx. 27000 tramway sets are in worldwide operation.

According to a UNIFE-survey the world market for tramways will increase until 2016 annually by close to 4%, reaching a volume of 3 billion Euros, as the need for mobility in urban areas is growing and climate-friendly transportation becomes more important.

The new tramway-generation Avenio combines 130 years of Siemens experience in tramway manufacturing and more than 20 years of expertise with the special requirements of low-floor-technology. Each Avenio for The Hague is 35 meters long and offers room for 70 seated and 163 standing passengers. Operating costs and sustainability of the Avenio were – next to price and quality – decisive criteria for awarding the contract to Siemens.

The 40 trams under the main contract will be deployed on 4 tram lines in The Hague. The Avenios operating on Line 9 will carry passengers from the city’s main railway station to the seaside resort of Scheveningen. The 20 additional Avenios will run on Line 1, the oldest route of the capital’s network.
