Record results for Austria’s winter tourism

Visitor numbers for the November-April period were higher than ever, with the number of foreign holidaymakers up 5.4%.

As provisional figures from Statistics Austria for the 2017/2018 winter season show, winter holidays in Austria are more popular than ever before: both the total number of overnight stays (71.84 million, up +4.7%) and the number of individual visits (19.83 million, up +5.3%) have risen to record heights.

The biggest contributors to these results, the best ever for a winter season, were the 13.98 million visitors from abroad (up +5.4%), who notched up a total of 55.39 million overnight stays. The number of domestic holidaymakers also rose over the same period, up 4.9% to 5.85 million.

The most of overnight stays by visitors from abroad during the period from November 2017 to April 2018 were made by holidaymakers from Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, along with the Czech Republic.

The average holiday duration remains 3.6 overnight stays, meaning that the trend towards shorter holidays appears to have been halted.
