Global demand for furniture from Austria

The Austrian furniture industry got off to an impressive start to Q1 of 2018, with an export surplus of 6.2% and a 5.9% increase in production.

Though 2017 proved difficult, the first quarter of 2018 has been entirely positive for the Austrian furniture industry , which chalked up a 5.9% hike in growth for the period January-March 2018. The best performers were shop fittings (+29%), office furniture (+8.1%) and kitchen furniture (+7.2%).

The Austrian furniture sector’s exports have enjoyed a similarly upward trajectory. Having achieved growth of 2.4% in 2017, the industry grew a further 6.2% (to EUR 241.6 million) in the first quarter of 2018. Furniture with a ‘Made in Austria’ tag has proved particularly popular in the EU, with demand up 6.6% to EUR 174.6 million. The biggest export market was Germany, followed by Poland, Italy and the Czech Republic.

Pursuing business beyond Europe has also turned out to be a rewarding strategy, with sales of Austrian furniture in the United Arab Emirates up 42.1% to EUR 1.2 million, strong growth in Kuwait and continued growth in the US – albeit with sales to Canada and China down 8.8% and 20.6% respectively.

These excellent results confirm that the 50 companies and approximately 6,000 employees working in the Austrian furniture industry have acquired an international reputation for premium design, sophisticated function and top quality.
