Overseas subsidiaries of Austrian companies now employ more than 1 million people
The importance of Austria in international commerce continues to rise, as is shown by data for 2016 analysed by Statistics Austria . Some 10,800 Austrian firms belong to an international parent (up 1% on 2015), while the number of international subsidiaries of Austrian firms remains relatively constant at 5,900 (up 0.3% on 2015).
International companies were found to employ approximately 595,000 staff in Austria and turned over a total of EUR 246 billion, bringing some 19,000 additional jobs (+3.3%) to the Austrian labour market. Foreign subsidiaries of Austrian companies (those with more than 50% Austrian ownership) accounted for 1.08 million jobs and achieved a total turnover of EUR 381 billion (+7.5%).
Austrian companies’ involvement abroad was concentrated on EU countries, with Germany leading the field and employing a 10.8% share of foreign subsidiaries’ total workforce. Between 7.1% and 9.3% of the foreign subsidiary workforce was based in each of Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic, with Poland accounting for a further 5.2%, the UK for 4.8%, Slovakia for 4.7%, Bulgaria and France for 2.6% each and Croatia for 2.5%. Another 4.8% were based in the USA, 4.2% in the Russian Federation, 3.2% in China and 3.1% in Ukraine.
