European Patent Office: record patent applications from Austria


Austrian submissions to the European Patent Office (EPO) reached new heights last year, with some 2,300 patent applications presented.

The European Patent Office (EPO) ’s annual report records a 3.8% increase in applications from Austria, with 2,292 European patents submitted in 2018, compared with 2,209 in 2017. Austria reached 10th place within Europe and 14th in the world.

Austria’s most prolific patent-seeker was the chemical conglomerate Borealis (171 submissions), followed by ZKW (117), austriamicrosystems (82), Tridonic (47), Lenzing (40), AVL List (38), voestalpine and Zumtobel (33 each), AT&S and Julius Blum (30 each). Most of the patent applications from Austria were submitted in the categories ‘electrical machinery, apparatus and energy’, ‘transport’, ‘civil engineering’, ‘other special machines’ and ‘macromolecular chemistry, polymers’.

Factoring in total population, Austria occupies 7th place, with 261 applications per million inhabitants – considerably higher than the average for the 28 EU countries, which is 139 applications per million.

Overall, patent applications to the EPO rose 4.6% to some 174,300 last year, with the five top countries by submission totals being the USA, Germany, Japan, France and China, followed by Switzerland in 6th place.
