2019 Export awards winners: voestalpine AG

The annual export prizes recognise the extraordinary achievements of Austrian companies on international markets. They have been awarded by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs since 1994. This year’s special ‘Global EcoVision Award’ went to voestalpine AG.

The newly inaugurated ‘Global EcoVision Award’ is intended to recognise companies whose innovative technologies, products and services represent a sustainable contribution to climate protection and reducing the burden on the environment. Particular store is set by projects that contribute to maintaining and/or extending Austrian companies’ technological edge, set an international example or represent an active contribution to the internationalisation of trade.

The first winner of the Global EcoVision Award is the technology and steel conglomerate voestalpine AG for its ‘H2Future’ project: one of the world’s largest experimental facilities for manufacturing ‘green’ hydrogen is currently under construction at voestalpine’s main headquarters in Austria. Providing a sufficient supply of this element on a stable and reliable industrial scale is likely to make a significant contribution to the long-term decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries. In addition to voestalpine, the project consortium includes Verbund, Siemens and the Austrian Power Grid, as well as their scientific partners, K1-MET and TNO.

Funds invested amount to EUR 18 billion and the project has been subsidised by the EU as part of the Horizon 2020 programme. The plant is expected to come online later in 2019.
