2019: a record-breaking year for Austrian tourism 


With 153 million overnight stays and 46 million visitors, Austria is a more popular tourist destination than ever.

Holidaymakers from around the world love visiting Austria. After all, where else will they find untouched countryside crystal-clear lakes, breathtaking mountain ranges, impressive cultural amenities, great tourist infrastructure and friendly, welcoming people? And the demand for this incomparable choice is stronger than ever before.

That’s why last year saw new record tourism figures, with overnight stays up by +1.9% to 152.64 million in 2019, breaking the 150 million barrier for the first time. The winter season has also enjoyed a positive start to the year.

Overnight stays by both international visitors (up +2.1% to 112.72 million) and domestic tourists (up +1.4% to 39.93 million) rose in 2019, with arrivals (the number of individual guests occupying tourist accommodation) rising by 3% to record levels of 46.18 million.

There was similar growth in the number of overnights stays by holidaymakers from the major visitor countries: holidaymakers from Germany increased by 0.7% (rising to 56.66 million), while stays by travellers from the Netherlands, the second-largest market, were up by 3.1% (to 10.35 million). The highest growth was recorded for visitors from Romania (up 8.8%), while the number of stays for globetrotters from China increased 5.6% (to 1.5 million).

Austria’s tourist sector has made a positive start to the 2019/20 winter season, with some 17.4 million overnight stays recorded during the two months of November and December, an increase of 4.5% over the same period in the previous year.
