Austria’s wine exports reach new heights

With an export value of more than EUR185 million and a turnover of 63.6 million litres of wine, Austria’s vintners set a new record for wine exports in 2019.

There is intense demand for Austrian wine is in high demand all over the world, with artisanal vintages from top winegrowers proving themselves again and again in international blind tastings. Last year, 2019, saw Austrian wine exporters setting new records, with consignments destined for export markets amounting to EUR185.4 million, up 9% on 2018. Total turnover even rose by 20.5% to 63.6 million litres.

These export figures are an endorsement of Austria’s policy over the last few decades of positioning domestically produced wine as a high-value niche product in a highly competitive international market. This rise in sales has principally been driven by white wine from Austria, although sales of bottled red wine also returned a strikingly positive performance.

Austrian wine was already been exported to 102 foreign markets in 2018 – already a great result. In addition to the most important export markets of Germany (up +3.9%), Switzerland (up +0.9%) and the USA (up +14.8%), the likes of the Netherlands (up +32.5%) and almost all the Scandinavian countries showed positive sales growth. In the Far East, China proved a promising market with a very positive rise in turnover (up +86.8%). After some years of stagnation, the Japanese market is also growing in importance again (+12.6%).
