Austria is third-richest EU country

28. December 2016

After Luxembourg, Ireland and ex aequo with the Netherlands, Austria is the next richest country in the European Union (EU). Outside the EU only the Norwegians and the Swiss are better off than the Austrians.

According to preliminary estimates from the EU statistics office Eurostat , in 2015 gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in purchasing power standards (PPS) ranged from 47% to 264% of the EU average (100%).

With a value of 128% each, Austria and the Netherlands have the highest GDP per capita of all EU member states except Luxembourg (264%) and Ireland (177%) sharing therefore third place. It is followed by Denmark (127%) as well as Germany and Sweden with 124% each. Other countries which were above the EU average were Belgium (119%), Finland (109%), the United Kingdom (108%) and France (106%).

GDP per capita was slightly below the EU average in Italy (96%) and Spain (90%). The two countries with the lowest GDP per head in terms of the EU average were once again Romania (57%) and Bulgaria (47%).

Norway (160%) and Switzerland (162%) were the only countries outside the EU with higher GDP per capita than Austria.
