Sharp rise in Austria’s food industry exports

9. July 2019

The food industry is one of the most important sectors of Austria’s economy, with exports to countries around the world climbing by 5.6% to EUR7.1 billion last year.

Food manufacturing is one of Austria’s biggest industries, with some 200 companies and their 26,000 staff ensuring that Austria’s 8.6 million population are supplied with high-quality, delicious foodstuffs every day. Common to all the companies – from the traditional family business all the way up to the large international corporations – is a strong connection to Austria.

The food industry is therefore of significance to the country as a whole and, through its network of upstream suppliers, is connected to almost every sector of the economy. Two thirds of Austria’s food products are exported to a total of over 180 countries.

The Austrian food industry achieved an increase in revenue through a steep rise in exports in 2018, with a 2.4% rise in overall produce sales amounting to EUR 8.5 billion and exports climbing 5.6% to EUR 7.1 billion.

A recent study has shown that the food industry is one of the most important sectors in Austria’s economy, with a total share of added value amounting to 3% and an even higher employment share of 3.5%.
