Bavaria has been the most important business partner outside national borders for Austrian companies for many years. With impressive export growth of around 15% last year, Austria also rose for the first time to the position of Bavaria's most important trade partner worldwide.

A bilateral trade volume of EUR 14.2 bn (1st half 2007) has meant that Austria has displaced the economic powerhouse, the USA with a trade volume of EUR 12.6 bn, from its first place position. The advance is so high that Austria will also take the title of Bavaria's most important trade partner for the whole fiscal year 2007. Total foreign trade between the countries is responsible for a total 230,000 jobs in Austria and Bavaria: 100,000 in Bavaria and 130,000 in Austria.

Suppliers of automotive products are the primary beneficiaries among Austrian exporters to Bavaria, accounting for around 40% of Austrian exports. If materials for automotive construction are also included - steel, lead, aluminium alloys, plastics or leather - this share rises to almost 50%. A second key pillar of Austrian exports to the Free State are in the sector of electronic manufacture. The spectrum ranges from electrical and electronic components through to electrical machines and appliances.
