EuroSkills 2008 Austria finishes the vocational European championships in second place

Austrian participants take eight gold, six silver and one bronze medal at the vocational European championships in Rotterdam.  

From 18th to 20th September, more than 400 young skilled workers from the whole of Europe took part in the vocational European championships EuroSkills 2008 , held for the first time this year in Rotterdam (Netherlands). The 16 Austrian participants, five young women and eleven men, managed to bring home a total of 15 medals. This meant that Austria took an exceptional second place out of all participating nations. The excellent medal haul achieved by the Austrian team underlines the strength of the Austrian education system which produces top skilled workers.

Austrian participants at EuroSkills 2008 came from the following vocational groups:

  • Electrician
  • Hairdresser (Women/Men)
  • Florist
  • Motorcycle technician
  • Light vehicles technician
  • Cook
  • Landscape gardener and designer
  • Bricklayer
  • Waiter
  • Cleaning operator
  • Plumber

EuroSkills will take place every two years in a different EU member state. The aim of the competition is to highlight the value of technical and vocational education. The next worldwide contest, WorldSkills , will be held in Calgary, Canada in 2009; the next EuroSkills in London, Great Britain, in 2010.
