2018 Export awards winners: Infineon Technologies Austria AG

26. July 2018

The annual export prizes recognise the extraordinary achievements of Austrian companies on international markets. They have been awarded by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs since 1994. This year’s gold award in the “industry” category went to Infineon Technologies Austria AG.

Infineon Technologies was born out of Siemens’ semiconductor operations in 1999, and the group’s global centre of excellence for new semiconductor materials, energy-saving processors and radar chips has been based in Austria since 2017. The company’s approximately 3,800 employees have helped it to achieve an annual turnover of EUR 2.5 billion, and more than a billion chips leave the factory gates every month.

Infineon is the undisputed global market leader in a number of fields, and there is an Infineon security chip in almost every second passport or ID card around the world. Nearly half of the world’s servers use an energy-saving chip to regulate voltage, and half of all new vehicle radar systems are equipped with Infineon processors.

Infineon is considered Austria’s most research-focused company. It is a real hive of activity, with international demand for the 300-mm thin wafer it produces now so high that a new production line has been set up. Some EUR 1,6 billion is due to be invested in the expanded facilities by 2021, making this the largest such project Austria has seen for years.
