Design and sustainability united in one block of wood

13. November 2019

Unique and high quality design isn’t always environmentally-friendly – but Christopher Widlroither and Christoph von Ritter have come up with a furniture product that definitely is. The two founders of Groenestyn Interiors have been putting their sustainable theories into sustainable practice in Mondsee, Upper Austria, bespoke tables and seating solutions from hand-selected South American lumber.

The most important consideration with wood from South America is reliably verifying its provenance from sustainable forestry sources. Using blockchain-based satellite monitoring (Xylene), the supply chain of every tree trunk can be monitored and checked, from forest to finished furniture. This means the legal provenance can be guaranteed, preventing illegal deforestation.

In addition, Groenestyn Interiors plants one tree in Paraguay, the country where the wood is sourced, for every item of furniture they sell, in order to promote the reforestation of local mixed woodland. The aim is to protect nature and encourage a shift towards sustainable use of natural resources through fair pricing and setting a good example.

In addition to producing its tables, Groenestyn Interiors has a second string to its bow in its lumber trading business.

Rooted in Upper Austria – used around the world: 2019 saw Upper Austria’s Export Center OÖ join forces for the second time with hub, ert, the Upper Austrian non-profits network, and ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA in search of the best international start-ups. From all the applications, 15 from Upper Austria won awards in the Hottest International Start-ups category.
