2007 yields exceptional vintage

The 2007 vintage produced grapes of outstanding quality, the wine promises to as good as the exceptional 2003 vintage - although with a lower yield due to the summer's high temperatures.

The 2007 Austrian vintage looks set to reach the outstanding quality levels of the 2003 vintage. However, the expected 2.2 to 2.4 million hectolitres are lower than the yield expected by the winegrowers. The high summer temperatures have meant a somewhat lower yield, but should therefore result in exceptionally high quality. Complex red wines and fruity whites with a relatively high alcohol content and low acidity are expected. There is a similar trend across the whole of Europe: the extremely early harvest has also meant the yields in France, Italy and German have been considerably lower. Around 50% of the wines currently produced in Austria are quality wines - the rest is table wine and country wine, accounting for 25% each. Table wines account for 60% of French wine and 75% of Spanish. The Austrian vintners have set a target of increasing quality wine production to 60%.
