Success continues for Austrian wine exports

28. April 2015

Despite harvest shortfalls, Austria's wine producers have achieved a significant rise in exports for the ninth time in a row. Export revenue rose by 5.2% to EUR 146m in 2014 - an all-time high.

Wine from Austria is more popular than ever before, as shown by the preliminary export figures from Statistics Austria . Last year export revenue climbed by 5.2% to EUR 146m, while the quantity exported increased by 6.4% to around 50 million litres.

The average export price was EUR 2.93 per litre. In the past decade Austria's wine exports have therefore undergone a shift towards ever higher quality and better value added.

Germany remained the most important market in 2014, accounting for 55% of export value and generated good growth rates of 5% in terms of volume and almost 3% in terms of value. The second largest export market is Switzerland, which grew by 7.8% to EUR 15m. There was also a sharp rise in exports to the USA (+15%).

Significant growth in wine exports was primarily seen from countries such as the Netherlands (+26%), Belgium (+24%), the United Kingdom (+14%) and China (+31%). In addition to the main export markets, these countries will continue to grow and will play an ever more important role in the future. Export success in neighbouring markets such as Italy, Slovakia, Poland and Croatia, but also Bulgaria, Romania and the Baltic States, are set to offer further growth opportunities in the future.
