The National Energy Globe Award Latvia goes to RenEsco SIA for a comprehensive renovations project of Soviet-era multi-family housing stock. In Latvia there are substantial social and economic problems that need to be solved. One problematic area is housing standards. In this case the ESCO (Energy Service Company) model plays a large role in being able to ease this major problem. Low-income families will never be able to renovate multi-family buildings by themselves, so ESCO aims to help them do it. ESCO understands that it is possible to combine different technologies and achieve higher energy efficiency in buildings. Such standards are not possible to achieve by simply insulation a building’s envelope.

RenEsco finances and implements comprehensive renovations of poor quality Soviet-era multi-family housing stock based on the standards of Energy Performance Contracting (EPC). The objectives:
1. To conserve the buildings and to protect them from weather damage, thereby securing the existence and usage of people’s homes for another one or two generations.
2. To provide good indoor climate conditions (e.g. at least 20-21 degrees Celsius in each apartment), and to deliver hot water in an energy efficient manner.
3. To supply the buildings that utilise renewable energy with heat pumps that have geothermal probes.

In the last weeks many more national Energy Globe winners have been honored in their countries in co-operation with advantageaustria , the foreign trade organization of the Austrian Economic Chamber. The winning projects range from high-tech to simple but effective ideas and provide answers to most of our environmental problems – be it through energy efficiency or renewable energy use or the careful use of our resources, such as water, etc.

All national Energy Globe winners from more than 160 countries will be introduced online at
in the realm of ENERGY GLOBE’s unique and global online Best Practice Week. Kick-off date is the UN World Environment Day on 5 June. Under the patronage of UNESCO and in cooperation with UNEP and UNIDO this unique awareness raising campaign from Energy Globe runs under the motto: We save the planet by acting, not by talking . Sustainability starts with you!

In the realm of the campaign Energy Globe also offers citizens a free online check to find out the individual energy saving potential. In addition with the online solar tool citizens have the option to find out how to generate and use solar energy – the tool delivers a country-specific result and takes into account the respective sunlight. The sum of the potential energy savings and the potential of solar power generated are documented continuously online on a global counter.

Since the end of May sustainable projects can be submitted again for Energy Globe Award 2015. All details and the entry form are available for download on . Contact:
