Austria offers expertise and technology for alternative energy development in Thailand. On 26 May 2009, the Austrian companies BDI-Biodiesel International AG, a world leader in biodiesel plants, and Enbasys GmbH presented recent trends in technology to an interested audience in Bangkok. The event was organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology in cooperation with the Austrian Embassy – Commercial Section.

As the world has grown more intertwined, environmental challenges have to be faced in every country and by every government, and Thailand is no exception. The Thai government’s objective is therefore to increase the share of renewable energy used in the country from 0.5% to 8% by the year 2011. There will be zone-based incentives for business in three special areas of the country. Machinery related to fuels from agriculture and waste (bio-fuels such as ethanol, biodiesel, biogas and synthetic oil) will be exempt from import duty and companies in this business will pay no corporate income tax, with no cap for eight years. The Thai Board of Investment is also promoting bio-diesel projects that use feedstock from crude palm oil and cooking oil.

Being among the leading developers of such renewable energy technology, Austrian companies respond to these global trends. They provide high-tech solutions for water power plants, wind and solar energy equipment, biodiesel plants, and many more products that match with the Thai government’s strategy in the environmental and energy field.

Taking this into account, the Austrian Embassy – Commercial Section especially promotes bilateral trade and investment destined to foster the use of alternative energies.

On 26 May 2009, the Technology Transfer Division of the Ministry of Science and Technology (Thai only) held a seminar on „Alternative Energy Development : A New Challenge of The Future“ in cooperation with the Austrian Embassy - Commercial Section at Vibhavadee Ballroom A, Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok. In this regard, Dr. Gustav Gressel, the Austrian Commercial Counsellor addressed short introductory remarks to the audience.
