Austria: first choice for a record number of international companies

The number of international companies choosing to put down roots in Austria crossed the 300 mark for the first time in 2016, with the number of startups and companies that conduct R&D doubling.

ABA-Invest in Austria , the national investment promotion agency, attracted some 319 international firms to Austria in 2016, up 7.4% on the previous year and breaking the 300-company barrier for the first time. Capital investment showed an even more pronounced increased, rising 42% to EUR 705.22 million (up from EUR 496 million in 2015). The number of newly created jobs also climbed slightly, from 2,613 in 2015 to 2,622.

116 companies (+13%) moved to Austria from Germany – traditionally the leading investor – but interest from China is also rising sharply, with 12 Chinese companies setting up shop in Austria with support from ABA. Some 70 firms also arrived from the CEE/SEE countries, above all from Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia and Russia.

The number of firms relocating to conduct research & development rose from 16 to 35 in 2016, and these alone have invested some EUR 124 million in Austria – a clear indication of the country’s strengths as research location. ABA also looks after international startups, and the number of those relocating to Austria doubled to 18 in 2016.

Austria’s attractions as a business location include its position as a hub to Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe, the availability of a highly skilled workforce, its great stability and the rule of law – all factors that are becoming increasingly significant in a troubled geo-political environment. circumstances.
