Austria Re-opens for Business

20. April 2020

Residents are required to wear masks

Austria becomes the first country in Europe on the way to normal life by easing the strict restrictions put in place due to the COVID 19.

The lockdown which was put in place on March 16 with bans of more than five people gathering in public place, began to ease on April 14 and hopefully will be a thing of the past by the end of June.

Shops of up to 400 square meters have re-opened as from April 14, although under strict conditions. Small shop owners must limit the numbers of walk-in customers and they are all mandated to wear face masks.

Bigger shops will re-open on May 1, restaurants and hotels still remain closed until at least mid –May.

Restrictions on movement of people are being extended till the end of April, while events and gatherings still remain banned till the end of June.

Despite the fact that Austria has 12,000 confirmed cases of corona virus, it was able to keep the death rate under 2%

However, due to the continued progression of the Corona pandemic and the resulting massive travel restrictions, Austria has raised the worldwide security risk to level 4.

Austrian embassies abroad no longer accept applications for visas, document verifications, legalisations and residence permits. This measure also applies to embassies of Schengen partners representing Austria in consular matters.

It is also strongly recommended to Austrian travelers to postpone non-essential journeys to a later date and to make use of all possibilities to return to Austria that are still available.
