Start of the pilot project “The College of Practical Skills & Startup Centre”

Umdasch Group Ventures is partner of the project “The College of Practical Skills & Startup Centre”. The college aims for the support of more than 500 new companies to create 1,600 new jobs. During the official launch ceremony at the High-Level Forum Africa-Europe 2018 we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Neulandt will support the building of the campus with the portable precast plant Neulandt 3P as well as the qualification of the local people.

The High-Level Forum Africa-Europe 2018, convened by Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Paul Kagame, Chair of the African Union, was strongly promoting innovation and digitization as the essential trailblazers for future developments.

Part of the forum was the launch of the pilot project “Nigerian College of Practical Skills & Startup Centre”. The aim is to create 1,600 new jobs and 500 to 800 new companies in the short term. The project is initiated by the International Center for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) , based in Vienna, and the catholic Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu , Nigeria.

Besides Umdasch Group Ventures partners are Coca Cola, backaldrin, Leeway, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO).

Amongst the supporters are also Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations.

Up to 1,000 young Nigerians - including at least 300 women – will be educated annually. After successful graduation they will be employed or self-employed in Nigeria through the opportunities provided by the project or partner companies.

Nigeria currently counts 190 million people but it is projected to have about 500 millionen inhabitants by 2100. It is an important political economy in West Africa. The project will have a high multiplication effect and is scalable in other African countries. It will be a very essential project for reverse migration and to support the local economy with a sustainable effect – help for self-help. Christian Anieke , initiator and vice rector of the Godfrey University, highlighted during his speech, that the first training courses will already start in a year's time.

The Umdasch Group, consisting of doka, The Store makers and Umdasch Group Ventures, celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. Fueled with a successful history we look into the future. Innovation, sustainability and education are important matters for us. Thus it was obvious to be involved in this promising project.

With Neulandt 3P , the Portable Precast Plant, Umdasch Group Ventures - the innovation hub of the Umdasch Group - enables construction companies to produce social and affordable houses in a very productive manner and by creating local added value. Therefore, we will participate in the construction of the campus, but even more important is that we will qualify the local workforce in building technologies and methods.

"As it is our goal to contribute in supporting people and countries in a sustainable way, we do not donate fishes but we teach how to fish. The project is a perfect example for this principle.", says Werner H. Bittner, Member of the Executive Board of Umdasch Group Ventures GmbH.
