Austria's capital successfully defends its top position in the international congress ranking. No surprise given the fact that the world's most important conference on HIV/AIDS was held this year in Vienna with 25,000 participants.

It is now the fifth time that Vienna has come out on top in the statistics of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) . Austria’s capital was the undisputed leader in the 2009 ranking, retaining first place. Vienna hosted 160 international congresses, followed by Barcelona (135) and Paris (131). Following the top three were Berlin (129), Singapore (119), Copenhagen (103) and Stockholm (102).

Congresses, conferences and incentives are an important factor for Vienna’s tourism industry: this sector accounts for 12.3% of all overnight stays in Vienna. Exceptional congress infrastructure, the high standards in the congress service industry and the city’s multifaceted cultural scene have all contributed to make Vienna the top destination when it comes to international conferences.

A recipe for success which attracts ever more event organisers to Vienna: for example the world’s most important conference on the topic of HIV/AIDS was held in Vienna from 18th to 23rd July 2010 with the motto “Rights Here, Right Now”. Vienna’s central role as a bridge between eastern and western Europe is reflected in its choice as a host city for the conference that welcomed a total of 25,000 participants from all over the world.
