Export success for Austria's brewers

28. February 2012

Growth at home and abroad is good news for the breweries. As a beer-drinking nation, Austria remains among the top in Europe.

A long tradition, huge variety and healthy ingredients are what make Austria’s beer market stand out and this is also reflected in the industry’s success. Last year sales of the 73 Austrian breweries went up. In Austria beer consumption rose by 2% to 8.43 million hectolitres, while there was a striking increase of 19.4% in beer exports. Total production of the brewing industry, which employs around 3,800 people, amounted to over 8.9 million hectolitres (+2.9%). The industry turned over more than EUR 1 billion in 2011.

The figures confirm that beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in Austria: in 2011 per-capita consumption rose to 108 litres. More than 1,000 different varieties of beer are now produced, all of which adds up to make Austria one of Europe’s leading beer nations.
