Salzburg Europe Summit 2020: Salzburg, Austria, 27-29 September 2020

8. June 2020

The Institute of the Regions of Europe (IRE) is organising its 16th Conference of European Regions and Cities (CERC). The topic of this year’s summit is ‘Europe and the Corona crisis – dangers and chances’.

For years, the Institute of the Regions of Europe (IRE) has been successfully working to strengthen the regions and municipalities of EuropeThe 16th Conference of European Regions and Cities will be held at Salzburg’s Congress venue from 27 to 29 September 2020.

With the shadow of the Coronoavirus pandemic hanging over us, this year’s summit will address the following questions:

  • What lessons can we learn from the Corona crisis? Should we expect more threats -- for example, to democracy -- or opportunities to tame the excesses of globalisation for the benefit of humanity? Will the European Green Deal launched before the crisis struck fall victim to the virus?
  • How will we get on top of the financial and economic challenges?
  • Can we intensify medical research to be better prepared for the next viral catastrophe?
  • Will a lack of solidarity in the face of crisis lead the EU to fall apart, or will it be strengthened? Will regional autonomy become a victim ofnational centralisation or will the crisis bring about a renaissance of the regions?
  • Can the world – can Europe – go back to the way things were before the pandemic?

These hot topics will be discussed in depth at seven discussion panel events featuring high-profile figures from the worlds of science, politics and economics, and it is hoped that the event will make a valuable contribution to emerging solutions.

The conference will of course make use of new forms of communication to comply with all relevant rules and regulations, and there will also be a livestream on all three days.
