National Energy Globe Norway 2020 awarded to "Clean Seas"

15. September 2020

Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators frontrunner for clean Arctics

The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators is the winner of Austria´s renowned award for environmental development and progress. On 1 October Austrian Commercial Attaché Wolfgang Sabella presented Frigg Jørgensen with the National Energy Globe Norway 2020 for the project “Clean Seas”. The ceremony was hosted by Austria´s Ambassador Wilhelm Donko at the Embassy in Oslo where all precautions where taken to conform with Corona restrictions.

Under cheerful leadership of Ms. Jørgensen the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) is working to combat marine plastic pollution - doing this for nearly two decades already. As part of these efforts, it is working to drastically cut back on single-use plastics on Arctic expedition cruise vessels through the implementation of educational and knowledge sharing clean-up activities with passengers and staff. The organisation has launched the Clean Seas Guidelines for visitors to the Arctic, a unique guide that provides travellers with information about responsible solutions concerning the reduction of their waste and plastic footprint before, during, and after their trip. Together with AECO’s sister organisation in Antarctica, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, it has also developed the Clean-up Svalbard (Spitzbergen) guidelines, which is aimed at engaging tourists in beach clean-up activities. This has resulted in the collection of over 40,000 kilos of marine litter.

The Award was bestowed by the jury upon the following reasons:

The Arctic region has felt a huge blow from plastic waste discarded by tourists, a huge problem that is affecting the tourism industry and marine life that often chokes on plastic discarded in seas and oceans. This problem prompted the national Energy Globe Award national winner in Norway to engage its members in a massive clean-up activity of the Svalbard island (Spitzbergen) by encouraging the reduction of single-use plastic and engaging tourists in clean-up activities. This is a good project that reduces the quantity of plastic discarded into oceans while protecting the marine ecosystem from the effects of plastic pollution. Congratulations on your initiative!

Energy Globe Award – An Austrian Initiative

Committed people all around the world develop solutions for the most pressing environmental problems of our time like resource scarcity, air and water pollution, erosion, climate change or dependence on fossil fuels. Although these solutions are readily available, they often remain unheard of. Energy Globe gives them a voice and presents them to a large audience to make them visible and encourage others to come up with their own innovative solution.

The „Energy Globe“ - The World Award for Sustainability - is today’s most renowned environmental prize worldwide, as established by the American agency Arthur D. Little in a survey. In total, participants from more than 180 nations participated with implemented projects e.g. in the year 2019 . All projects protecting our environment may be submitted .
The Energy Globe Award is presented in the categories Life, Earth, Fire, Water, Air and the future-oriented category Youth. Every year, there is also a special category like e.g. Smart Plastics.
This unique award is presented in form of an award ceremony on a regional basis in the founding country Austria (all federal states), on a national basis in more than 90 participating countries (all other country winners are presented online), and partly in large TV galas (Prague, Budapest, Bucharest, …).
At the end of the year, the Energy Globe World Award is presented. Projects by individuals as well as companies or NGOs may be submitted.
All project submissions are eligible for both participation on a national and global basis. Participation is for free.
The Energy Globe Award, World Award for Sustainability, is organized by the independent Energy Globe Foundation from Austria.
