Austrian Company supports large infrastructure projects for Oman’s power and water supply

The Austrian expert company VTU Energy concentrates on consultancy and software systems for the power and energy-intensive process industries.

It supports plant developers and operating companies in the conceptual design of new plants or plant modifications, and for independent water and power plants (IWPP). VTU supplies turn-key fuel demand models and settlement systems that process plant data for the invoicing of power and water purchase agreements between the independent producers and the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP).

The Salalah IWPP is a gas turbine-based cogeneration plant with a nominal power capacity of 450 MW and a nominal water production of approximately 68,000 m³/day (15 MIGD). While VTU Energy has dealt with much larger IWPP projects in the Middle East region, this plant had the specific complexity of operating in a small regional electricity grid, which required special constraints on the mix of power generation equipment, desalination technology and plant auxiliaries.

This was the first project of VTU in the sultanate, and since then, the company has been involved in many large power & water infrastructure projects in Oman. VTU Energy’s contribution to these projects helps to ensure that the Sultanate of Oman has a secure and at the same time affordable power and water supply that increases steadily with the growing demand due to growing levels of industrialization and standard of living.
