Austria’s wine exports as buoyant as ever

27. May 2019

With exports totalling more than EUR 170 million and sales of 52.6 million litres of wine, Austria’s wine-growers celebrated another record year in 2018.

Austria’s wines are prized by wine experts and connoisseurs around the world. Produced using artisanal processess by top vintners, they have constantly proved their quality in international blind tastings.

Their success also speaks for itself: the Austrian Wine Marketing agency reports that 2018 was yet another record year for exports of Austrian wine, with sales of EUR 170.3 million representing a rise of 6.9% over the previous 12 months – a record turnover.

The excellent 2017 vintage also saw Austria’s wine exporters scaling new heights in production volumes during 2018, with 52.6 million litres of wine sold on foreign markets, amounting to a 10.5% increase on the previous year. The average price per litre was EUR 3.24, driven once again by the steady rise in sales of bottled wine.

Third-country markets outside the EU made a significant contribution to these excellent results and represented almost 30% of total export value for 2018; exports to the USA and Canada in particular have experienced meteoric growth.

These export figures confirm the effectiveness of the Austrian wine marketing strategy over the past few decades, positioning Austrian wine as a high-value, niche product on a fiercely competitive international market. Austrian wine exports have risen by some 6.5% p.a. for the last 15 years.
