The 46 Austrian professionals taking part in the WorldSkills Competition in Kazan have cleaned up, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of the dual education system.

Austrian vocational training has once again proved that it is among the best in the world, as shown by the excellent results achieved at the WorldSkills 2019 professional competition in Kazan (Russia). A total of 46 challengers from Austria took part between 22 and 27 August 2019, and the young competitors returned proudly sporting 12 medals and 17 “Medallions for Excellence”.

Six of the medals were gold, five were silver and one bronze, and these 12 awards were enough to catapult Austria into the global top ten medal-winners, not to mention helping them to secure first place among the EU nations. In addition, these top-class professionals have become excellent ambassadors for Austrian firms, for the country as a business location and for the vocational education system as a whole.

This excellent performance is proof positive that Austria’s dual education system for training young professionals has become an essential option and a model with an international future. It is not surprising that dual education, involving parallel training in a commercial setting and a vocational school, has since been enjoying success as a highly prized Austrian export product.

WorldSkills International holds this vocational world championship every two years, with the aim of encouraging young professionals and developing innovative approaches to vocational training. Some 1,700 participants from 70 WorldSkills nations competed in 56 disciplines at the competition in Kazan, with the competitors demonstrating their knowledge and skills in a wide range of work situations.

The next European vocational championships will be held in Austria from 16 to 20 September 2020, where EuroSkills 2020 in Graz will see approximately 600 hopefuls from eight vocational groups competing for glory in 45-50 professional categories.
