Full (water) power ahead!

The Austrian company ANDRITZ HYDRO has modernized an important hydropower station in the Philippines.

ANDRITZ HYDRO is part of the ANDRITZ GROUP. It is a global supplier of electro-mechanical equipment and services from water-to-wire” for hydropower plants. One of the world's largest suppliers on the market for hydropower generation, ANDRITZ HYDRO – with more than 175 years’ experience in turbine technology and 120 years’ experience in electrical engineering – offers a comprehensive Portfolio. ANDRITZ HYDRO has a long history in the Philippines and operates an office in Manila since 2009. In total ANDRITZ HYDRO installed or rehabilitated more than 40 units with a capacity of over 1,600 MW.

Privately owned First Gen Hydro Power Corporation of the Philippines awarded a contract to ANDRITZ HYDRO to refurbish and upgrade the Pantabangan hydroelectric power plant. The plant, originally commissioned in the 1970s, was the first significant power facility of to be privatized by the state energy supplier Napcor (National Power Corp.).The modernization project has increased the plant capacity from 100 MW to 120 MW, and extended the expected lifespan of the plant by another 25 years. The refurbishment contract included replacement of the Francis turbines, new generator stator windings and poles, and replacement of almost all electrical equipment including governor, unit automation and SCADA system, static excitation, generator and transformer protection, medium voltage switchgear and low voltage distribution equipment. Since beginning of 2011 the plant is again in commercial operation.
