Qatar Rail awards $ 2.2 billion contract to Porr-consortium

Porr receives the largest contract in its company history in Qatar

Following a newspaper report of the Gulf Times, the Austrian Porr GmbH received the largest contract in its history. Qatar Rail has announced the awards of construction contracts for the Doha Metro, with these being the first larger orders for tunneling and main stations works in the value of QAR 30 billion (USD 8.24 billion).

Porr received the award for the tunneling works of the "Green Line" with its consortium together with Saudi Bin Laden Group (SBG) and Hamad bin Khalid Construction (HBK).

The construction of the "Green Line" comprises a twin tunnel with a length of 16.6 km and the construction of 8 metro stations. The tunnel will be 20 meters below ground on average, where the Green line leading from the Msheireb main station in the center of Doha to the Education City as to the Al Rayyan Stadium, which will be erected for the FIFA Worldcup 2022. The total value of the contract to the consortium Porr stands at QAR 8.0 billion (USD 2.2 billion).

Porr had already been awarded the contract for the Enabling Works in July 2012 which value USD 79 million, also with the consortium Porr/SBG/HBK.

The other contracts were awarded to international consortiums that proof the strong competition, in which the Austrian Porr has prevailed. The construction of the "Red Line North" has been awarded to a consortium of Impregilo and SK Engineering & Construction and Galfar Al Misnad Engineering & Construction. The construction of the "Red Line South" was awarded to Qatari Diar Vinci Corporation, GS Engineering & Construction and Al Darwish Engineering. The fourth construction contract comprises the very large metro stations Msheireb and Education City and was awarded to Samsung C & T Corporation, Obrascon Huarte Lain (OHL) and Qatar Building Company. After awarding these contracts the only missing award is for the "Golden Line".

Construction works should start by the end of 2013, Doha Metro should begin its operations at the end of 2019.
