ENERGY GLOBE Award 2013: National environmental award for Mali and Sweden

16. May 2013

STOCKHOLM. Within a festive event on 16 May 2013, two ENERGY GLOBE awards were handed over to this year’s winning environmental projects. The Swedish ‘GreenZone’ project focuses on emission-free, eco-friendly builing. Mali’s winning project ‘Solvatten’, created by a Swedish company, developed canisters which produce clean drinking water for African households.

Sweden’s winner is the project GreenZone in Umeå which was implemented by Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB and EcoCycleDesign. GreenZone is an emission-free, energy-neutral service center for automobile traffic which includes a gas station, a restaurant, and a car dealership. The jury chaired by Maneka Gandhi justified the awarding of the national environmental prize with the holistic approach which makes the project a prototype for eco-friendly building in the 21st century.

Mali’s winning project is of Swedish origin as well. The Stockholm-based company Solvatten AB developed an affordable and portable canister for water treatment. Solvatten allows households near Bamako, the Malian capital, to use sunlight for the production of clean drinking water. The jury of the ENERGY GLOBE Foundation assessed this extraordinary project as win-win situation for humans and the environment.

Both prizes were awarded on 16 May 2013 at the Commercial Section of the Austrian Embassy in Stockholm. The Austrian Commercial Counsellor in Stockholm, Albrecht Zimburg, awarded the environmental prize within a festive event.

The ENERGY GLOBE Foundation was founded in Austria in 1999. Projects with a focus on energy efficiency, saving resources, and using renewable energy are awarded. On 5 June – World Environment Day – all national ENERGY GLOBE winners from 161 countries will be presented under the patronage of UNESCO and UNEP. All awarded projects contribute to a sustainable future, inspire, bring hope, and offer geographically independent solutions.
