Made in Austria: New organ for The Gothenburg Concert Hall

23. January 2018

Renowned Rieger Orgelbau to construct a new masterpiece for Gothenburg music lovers

Austrian builder of traditional organs, Rieger Orgelbau, has been contracted to build a new organ for The Gothenburg Concert Hall . The project will be extensive with the new organ having a total of 106 registers. Because of its size it only can be installed in the Concert Hall during the holiday season in order not to disrupt the regular activities. The inauguration of the organ is planned to take place in 2021.

The Austrian company has a long history of manufacturing organs. Rieger Orgelbau was founded in in the middle of the 19th century. Among the many international organ projects are for example the organ of the Philharmonie de Paris and the organ of the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

City of Gothenburg real estate company, Higab, the owner of the Concert Hall is the contracting authority for this project. During talks with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg International Organ Academy a restoration of the old organ built in 1937 was considered as an option. In the end, the decision fell on investing in a new organ that enables a richer repertoire of music to be performed.

Gothenburg Organ Art Center , a part of Gothenburg University that conducts research in organ building and is involved in the Gothenburg International Organ Academy, is well known among organ builders and the city of Gothenburg is considered an international organ center. Thus, being contracted this new organ is also a great honour for the company.
