State-of-the-art anaerobic digestion plant Made in Austria opens in Forsbacka

What does the forest around the Swedish town of Forsbacka and the Austrian company Thöni share? A Dry-AD plant! Thöni, an Austrian high-tech company, has built a state-of-the-art anaerobic digestion plant for Gästrike Ekogas AB, about 180km north of Stockholm. Acting as general contractor the company did not only install its class-leading TTV core module digester but also provided mechanical and electrical engineering. Thus covering everything, from reception-area to composting together with ancillary buildings.

The plant will produce biogas from 25,000 tonnes of energy-rich household kitchen- and bio-waste using the largest Thöni TTV digester, with a volume of 2,250 m3. Biogas produced in the digester will be further processed in a biogas upgrading plant turning it into high-grade bio-methane.  The solid digestate fraction undergoes a further aerobic composting process in enclosed composting units. This produces a high quality compost  which will be certified for organic farming.

The new biogas plant in Forsbacka  was officially opened on  September 12th, 2017 and thus makes a further important contribution to Sweden's ambitious climate target to reduce GHG emissions by 40% by the year 2030.
