World class solar energy for Singapore

Keeping students and staff at UWC-SEA both cool and warm

S.O.L.I.D. is a solar engineering company specialising in all aspects of large-scale solar thermal energy plants.

To satisfy the needs of the growing numbers of pupils and students, the United World College of South East Asia (UWC-SEA) developed a second campus. Known as East Campus, it is 76,000 m² in size and can house 2,500 students. It includes workshops, laboratories, an audio studio, theaters, libraries, a cafeteria, dorms, sports grounds and green recreational areas for students and staff.

The East Campus has also become a lighthouse project for state-of-the-art applied environmental and climate protection technologies. The solar thermal collectors, supplied by S.O.L.I.D., will generate ‘green’ energy of 2,200 MWh per year over 25 years. They have used the proven ‘Gluatmugl HT’, especially suited to very high temperatures. This system provides both air conditioning and 100% of hot water demand for the campus. In mid-2013 it was the most powerful solar cooling device worldwide. Hot water supply has been operational since August 2011, cooling since October 2011.

Due to all efforts at UWC’s new campus including the Solar Cooling system, the Green Mark Platinum certificate was awarded to UWC by the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore - the highest possible certificate for environmentally friendly buildings.
