The city of Vienna still boasts the best quality of life

21. March 2017

This year’s Mercer survey has confirmed Vienna’s pole position in the company’s international city rankings.

Vienna, Austria’s federal capital, has topped the rankings for cities with the best quality of life for the 8th time in a row. That’s according to the most recent survey of living standards in 231 cities carried about by the international consultancy firm Mercer . Zurich and Auckland took 2nd and 3rd place respectively, followed by Munich, Vancouver, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Geneva, Copenhagen and Basel.

Singapore (25th place) had the highest quality of life among the Asiatic cities, with Dubai (74th place) leading the field in the Middle East and Africa. Montevideo (79th place), the capital of Uruguay, took the prize in South America. It was left to Bangui (Central African Republic) and Baghdad (Iraq) to bring up the rear in the rankings.

For the annual survey, Mercer applies a total of 39 criteria in ten categories that incorporate political, social, economic and environmental factors – including political stability, development potential, criminality, rent costs, public transport, electricity supply, green space, air and water quality, healthcare and school provision, freedom of the press and sporting, leisure, cultural and shopping facilities.
