29. March 2018

This year’s Mercer quality of life survey has confirmed Vienna’s pole position in the international city rankings.

The Austrian capital Vienna has topped the rankings of cities with the best quality of life for the 9th time in a row. That was the conclusion of the latest annual survey by consultancy firm Mercer , which compared quality of life in 231 world cities. Zurich is runner-up, followed by Auckland and Munich in joint 3rd place.

According to Mercer, Vienna’s principal attractions include its safety, excellent local public transport and wide variety of cultural and leisure attractions. Most of the top 10 cities in the rankings were European, including Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Geneva, Copenhagen and Basel. The other countries to make the cut were New Zealand with Auckland, Canada with Vancouver and Australia with Sydney.

In Asia, Singapore (25th) had the highest quality of life, with Dubai (74th) leading the field in the Middle East and Africa region and Uruguay’s capital Montevideo (77th) scoring highest in South America. Bangui (Central African Republic) und Baghdad (Iraq) were left bringing up the rear in the rankings.

The Mercer survey compares some 230 major cities every year by applying a total of 39 criteria that have been rated of key importance by employees who have been sent abroad. These include social, economic and environmental considerations, as well as factors such as health and educational opportunities.
