10 Years of Rosenbauer America – A Successful Austrian - U. S. partnership

June 23, 2008

Around 700 fire trucks ‘made in the U.S.A. ’ annually

In June 2008 Austrian Consul General Robert Zischg and Trade Commissioner Franz Roessler from Chicago had a chance to witness an example of a successful U.S.-Austrian production and sales collaboration first-hand. Austrian-based Rosenbauer Group is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of firefighting vehicles. At the beginning of the 1990s, the decision was made to seek cooperation with locally-based production partners rather then just export vehicles from Austria . Today, Rosenbauer has an approx. 13% share of the American fire market. Rosenbauer America ’s President Harald Boer in Lyons , South Dakota appreciates his company’s interest in long-term development of its U.S. operations. Rob Kreikemeier from RK Aerials in Fremont , Nebraska brought his company into the Rosenbauer group as he saw a chance to expand the product portfolio and to obtain new technologies.

Founded ten years ago, Rosenbauer’s American subsidiary has already established itself as the number two in the U.S. fire industry. Rosenbauer America has four production centers at three locations in the Midwest . The General and Central Divisions form the original core of the U.S. operation, which has been expanded in recent years to include the Aerials Division and chassis production. Around 700 fire vehicles leave the Rosenbauer plants in the U.S. annually, 85% of which are placed in the U.S. market. The production range extends from industrially produced municipal vehicles and U.S. standard aerials to advanced speed vehicles for use by industrial fire brigades, at airports and to combat forest fires.

With its wide range of municipal firefighting vehicles and aerials built to both European and US standards, its extensive series of aircraft firefighting and rescue vehicles as well as industrial firefighting vehicles, advanced firefighting components and fire & safety equipment, Rosenbauer is one of the few industry "full-liners". With its worldwide sales and customer service network, Rosenbauer has a permanent presence in more than 100 countries. Rosenbauer International AG, headquartered in Linz-Leonding, Austria, is the group`s holding company and derives 89% of its revenues from exports. In 2007 the group employed 1,650 people worldwide in eleven production and six sales companies.
