Austria Red Wines Strike in New York

October 24, 2014

The Austrian Trade Commmission together with the Austrian Wine Marketing Board and Wein Burgenland hosted an exclusive red-wine tasting event on October 15 at The Modern restaurant in New York City. 40 selected members of press, wine retail, and restaurant tasted flights of the indigenous varieties Zweigelt, Sankt Laurent, and Blaufrankisch from across the quality wine growing regions and included a special flights of older vintages.

Austria’s new red wine culture is a relatively recent phenomenon when compared to its traditional competence in white wine production. The 1986 vintage, with the legendary Blaufränkisch Mariental from Triebaumer, is often seen as the beginning of a spectacular upward trend.

The Austrian Wine Marketing Board selected some of the most highly ranked red wines from recent harvests, the monumental 2011 and 2012 as well as excellent vintages 2006 and 2009 for this special occasion in New York City. In order to offer insights into the ageability and development of Blaufränkisch, a few highlights from the previous decade and before were poured as well. These wines received their top ratings from leading national industry experts and wine awards ceremonies.

Willi Klinger, the GM of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board, Christian Zechmeister, GM of Wein Burgenland, David Schildknecht, Wine Writer, and James Wright, Wine Consultant & Writer guided the 40 top-class attendees through five different wine flights, 25 wines total, in two hours.

The response could not have been any better. Howard Goldberg from the New York Times closed the seminar with following words: "There were no smiley-face rah-rah commercial undertones that can pulse through some commercial interests' so-called master classes; just the facts, about successes, failures, hesitations, tentativeness in the vines and in the cellars and the front offices. It's a treat to experience Old World sensibilities address a new world of wine exploration and discovery. You can count on Austria for sophisticated high-level exploratory wine seminars."
