Earth Day Image
April 25, 2013

New York City had the pleasure of hosting four fantastic biodynamic DEMETER winemakers from Austria – Nikolaihof’s Niki Saahs, Hager Mathias’s Mathias and Doris Hager, Wimmer-Czerny’s Hans Czerny, and Sepp Moser’s Niki Moser on Earth Day (April 22).

These four, along with Klaus Wittauer of KW Selections representing Werner Michlits of Weingut Meinklang, led a two hour seminar at NYC’s Hearth Restaurant for top trade and press. The goal of the seminar was to understand the practices of biodynamics through the Demeter organization and how each winemaker uses these practices to adapt to his own wines.

The crowd remained rapt as each winemaker tackled a different aspect of biodynamics from the vineyards to the cellar and everything in between.

Following this unprecedented seminar, the group moved to Edi & the Wolf, a local Austrian restaurant styled after that of an Austrian wine tavern or heurigen. The wine dinner ran all night and despite being a Monday night, the draw of the Earth Day dinner featuring sustainable food & wine brought in a great crowd. The winemakers engaged with guests, poured wines and explained why they were a perfect pairing for the carefully crafted menu by Chef Eduard Fraunder (aka Edi.)

By the party was just getting started because at 10pm we moved venues to The Third Man, Edi & the Wolf’s new cocktail bar, next door. A plethora of organic and biodynamic Austrian wines were available to taste from various groups such as Demeter, Respeckt, BioAustria, and more.

The wines showed beautifully and were enjoyed until the wee hours of the morning. Not bad for a Monday night!
To those who were able to join us, we truly appreciate your participation. For those who could not, we’ll get ya next time!
