EGGER Group set for growth

October 23, 2017

The Austrian manufacturer of wood-based materials has great plans for the future as it continues to expand its international presence with new facilities in Argentina and the USA.

The Austrian wood specialist EGGER has been setting record after record. Headquarted in St. Johann in Tyrol, the Egger group has some 8,200 employees and recorded a turnover of some EUR 2.4 billion in the 2016/17 financial year (up 1.7%). It was able to increase production of untreated panels (including cut timber) to a volume of 7.9 million m³ (up 3 %), meaning that it was running at full capacity. The company manufactures a comprehensive range of wood materials (chipboard, OSB panels and MDF sheets) at 17 locations across Europe.

Egger also has ambitious expansion plans, and the company’s internationalisation strategy continues to make good progress. It has just spent USD 155 million acquiring a plant in Concordia, Argentina, from the Chilean company Masisa, giving Egger its first manufacturing facility outside Europe.

An additional greenfield project is in the early stages of planning: work is to begin on a EUR 260-million wood-based materials plant in Lexington, North Carolina, in 2018, with production due to start in 2020. A new distribution centre in Detroit, Michigan is the first step in the company’s entry to the US market. It will serve both the US and Canada, and is due to start operation in October.

EGGER is also expanding in Europe, with work on a new chipboard manufacturing facility in the Polish town of Biskupiec due for completion at the end of 2018.
