Austria takes 3 of 7 prestigious European EMAS Awards

Since 2005, the prestigious European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) Awards have been handed to top firms and local authorities for excellence in environmental management.  At the recent awards ceremony in Stockholm in November, Austrian organizations were presented three of the seven awards for their ground-breaking environmental management contributions.

In the Medium Organization category, Austria Glas Recycling (AGR) was recognized for its success in green procurement and establishing cooperation between municipalities, private and municipal waste-collection companies, research institutions and glass industry stakeholders.  AGR organizes the collecting and recycling of used glass packaging throughout Austria.

In the Large Organization category, VAE Eisenbahnsysteme was recognized for its success in expanding its work force by 30-40 people and reducing 1,400 metric tons of CO2 emissions in 2009.  This was accomplished by developing its own integrated system for screening environmental and safety risks.  In addition, VAE works closely together with its suppliers and clients to “green” its supply chain, covering everything from its energy supply to adhering to criteria in the procurement of investments and repairs. The company, part of the voestalpine group, is a world-leading partner for railroad turnout systems, including drive and safety systems and diagnostic systems.

In the Public Organizations category, the province of Upper Austria was recognized for its central procurement office´s efforts to mainstream sustainable procurement within the region.  The agency took a central procurement function by utilizing a dedicated information platform to work with other institutions. The group is also active on a national level, contributing to the National Action Plan for Sustainable Procurement, and  participates in various European projects.
