April 11, 2011

Eurostat Report shows Austria third after Latvia and Sweden

Among the 27 EU countries Austria ranks third in use of renewable energies with 27 percent, after Latvia with 36 percent and Sweden with 34 percent. The numbers refering back to the year 2009 were republished today in a Eurostat press release on the occasion of the opening of a EU-wide Sustainable Energy Week .

On average, EU countries used nine percent renewable energy in 2009, up from five percent in 1999. Sources of renewable energy include biomass, biodiesel, geothermal energy, wind, water and solar power.

In a recent hour-long interview with The EmeraldPlanet, a worldwide non-profit organization, Austrian Ambassador to the US Christian Prosl talks extensively about Austria's renewable energy strategy, which is to depend solely on renewables by the year 2050. Prosl also points to the awarded Austrian eco region Güssing as an example for profitable renewable energy exports.
