Austrian Wine Takes Chicago by Storm

April 23, 2012

At a sold out event in Chicago, Austria celebrates the success of 55 Austrian wine makers

The run on tickets for this year's AUSTRIA UNCORKED event in Chicago, organized by the Austrian Trade Commission in New York and Chicago in cooperation with the Austrian Wine Marketing Board exceeded once again all expectations.

200 wine experts attended the trade and media event in the afternoon, 400 consumers came to enjoy Austrian wine and cuisine at the evening event, which took place on April 19 at Venue One in the trendy West Loop area of Chicago.

AUSTRIA UNCORKED 2012 presented 55 wine makers and further increased market visibility of Austrian wines in the US. The "Grüner Veltliner", or "Gruner", and the most characteristic among Austrian reds, the Blaufränkisch, proved most popular among the audience.

Six trendy restaurants from the West Loop neighborhood delivered culinary highlights and delights, including mini-steaks and spanferkel – delicious suckling pig. The AMA served up a spectacular cheese and ham buffet. And the sweet finale was taken care of by Julius Meinl, the same firm that, for many years, has been lending its distinctive Austrian accent to the “Windy City” with its original Viennese coffeehouse near the legendary Wrigley Field baseball stadium, and the Austrian Bakery & Deli. Proceeds from the event will benefit a local charity project in Chicago, Common Threads , which teaches low-income children to cook wholesome and affordable meals to prevent childhood obesity.

Austria Uncorked coordinator Stephanie Artner was excited about the positive reception: "We are delighted to see that Austrian wine continues to occupy a special niche within the US market. More and more restaurants and hotels include Austria as an own wine region on their menus."

For Willi Klinger, the General Manager of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board, the "Austria Uncorked" format, with a professional wine tasting
in the afternoon and an exciting public culinary event in the evening has been a tremendous success. “It will be fully implemented in the future - even in cities where the Austrian Wine Marketing Board has not yet made an appearance!”
