Automotive Trade Mission 2014 - Canada & Detroit

Seven Austrian companies participated in the 2014 Automotive Trade Mission to Canada and the US from June 1st-5th 2014. The trip was organized by ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Toronto and Chicago in cooperation with the Canadian Embassy in Vienna and featured meetings with global US and German automotive companies in both countries. The Austrian participants had the opportunity to explore market opportunities in the North American automotive industry, get comprehensive updates on current trends and make valuable connections with potential business partners.

The Canadian program included appointments with the automotive OEM Toyota as well as global suppliers like the Magna subsidiary Karmax Heavy Stamping. During meetings the Austrian participants had the opportunity to present their product/services to representatives of the purchasing departments of the local companies and get valuable feedback and suggestions. Further, the group participated in the annual conference of the Automtive Parts Manufacturing Association APMA in Windsor- Canada were exclusive B2B meetings with potential local partners were prearranged for them, followed by an special dinner invitation through the Canadian Embassy and additional networking opportunities.

The U.S.-part of the trip took place in Detroit –Michigan - the automotive engineering and sales capital of the world. After a comprehensive industry update by experts from leading automotive associations like the Center of Automotive Research CAR and the Original Equipment Suppliers Association OESA, the participants visited the U.S. automotive giant General Motors and the German Tier 1 supplier Robert Bosch USA where again meetings with purchasing representatives were held. During a networking event organized by the local business development organization Detroit Regional Chamber the Austrian companies connected with local industry representatives as well as business consultants. Also a highlight was the visit to the German supplier Dr. Schneider Group who shared valuable insight to market entry questions and challenges based on their own experience.

Most of participating companies are already present in this competitive market. With a plant in Illinois - USA and production facilities in Europe and Asia, POLLMANN is considered a global supplier of complex and intelligent but also simple mechatronic components and products from composite plastic materials and metal.
The global provider for high quality power-cords FELLER GmbH is already located in the US with a production facility in North Carolina as well as a sales office in California. ANGER MACHINING ’s US location is working closely with global OEMs already as well: their transfer centers are used by a North American original equipment manufacturer for the mass production of gears. VOESTALPINE Austria Draht operates in the North American market through an office in Chicago. GCI MANAGEMENT CONSULTING intends to expand its North American activities with an office in Denver (Colorado) and partners in Detroit (Michigan). The rubber manufacturing company RAVEN RUBBER plans on supplying more rubber products to North America from its own production plant in Mexico. Meetings during the Trade Mission indicate that there will also be several potential applications for the innovative welding technologies of INOCON in the U.S. and Canada.

The North American automotive sector has reached a new record sales level in 2013. 15.6 Mio. vehicles were sold in the US and an additional 1.74 Mio. in Canada. Alone the “Detroit 3“ (General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) sold 7.4 Mio. vehicles (+13.5% from 2012).
