July 14, 2009

400 guests at the Austrian Paper Conference 2009 in Graz

For decades the Austrian paper trade association Austropapier , the technical society Özepa and the alumni club APV have jointly organized the Austrian Paper Conference . This year’s meeting in Graz covered technology, innovation, climate change and energy.

About 40 technical presentations were given on topics like pulp, paper manufacturing, paper properties, auxiliary supplies, energy and bio-refineries. Experts from paper mills, supply and plant construction firms and research and consulting companies from Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Italy, the Czech Republic and Austria exhibited new innovative technologies.

Climate change was the main focus this year. Facts and future scenarios of climate change and the economy, and their social and political consequences were presented. Austropapier energy spokesman Dr. Max Oberhumer gave an overview of the Austrian paper industry’s achievements in the area of climate protection. Support of sustainable forest management, maximized energy efficiency of plants, comprehensive use of biofuel and cogeneration (combined heat and power) plants, generation of CO2-free green electricity and resource management by recycling distinguish the industry. He pointed out that the paper industry significantly contributes to the fight against climate change, but energy and climate policy must not weaken the competitiveness of Austrian businesses.

The Austrian Paper Conference raised awareness of the importance of climate change for science, politics and industry. Questions like feasibility of a global climate protection agreement and financing of climate protection measures will be the subject of talks and negotiations in the next few months.
