ECO WORLD STYRIA: Number 1 in Environmental Engineering Clusters Worldwide

February 26, 2010

The energy and environmental engineering cluster ECO WORLD STYRIA was elected the worldwide number 1 in the ranking of the international Cleantech Group (USA)

This award is an impressive confirmation for the cluster work of Styria/Austria. “In 2008 alone, around 2,000 new jobs were created. Within only five years, ECO WORLD STYRIA climbed to the very top in energy and environmental engineering”, emphasizes Christian Buchmann, member of the Styrian provincial government.

The Cleantech Group, with its headquarters in Atlanta, is a global investment network in the “clean technologies” area and has been generating worldwide rankings according to specially developed criteria for years. Whereas the past focus has been on countries and universities, this year’s criteria were applied to environmental engineering clusters for the first time.

“150 companies generate revenues of 2.7 billion Euros in environmental engineering, which is comparable with around 8% of the regional gross domestic product. A 22% average growth rate over the last few years, which is substantially higher than global market growth, indicates that world market shares were won. Thus, Styria records the highest density of “clean technologies” companies, which justified the ranking decision for the author of the Cleantech study Shawn Lesser. Furthermore, he highlights the pioneering work and innovative power of the Styrian companies.

In 2nd to 5th place of the rankings are the clusters from New England, Finland, Canada and Denmark. See the rankings, as well as a definition of “cluster”, at .

Bernhard Puttinger, Managing Director of ECO WORLD STYRIA sees the award as a confirmation of a strategy pursued over the past years: “Thus we have achieved our vision to become the ‘clean technologies’ location number 1.” He states the next five years’ objective is to double the number of companies with global engineering leadership by focusing on 5 strategic innovation levers.

ECO WORLD STYRIA was founded in 2005, and today, for the first time, comprises more than 150 member companies. Currently, there are a total of approximately 13,000 green jobs in these Styrian engineering companies. The supporting organizations are the Styrian Business Promotion Agency (SFG), the Federal Province of Styria as well as the City of Graz.
