President of the U.S. National League of Cities visits Austria

One of the keynote speakers at ENVIETECH 2010--Austria’s most important environmental technology event held in February--was Ronald O. Loveridge, Mayor of the City of Riverside, CA and President of the U. S. National League of Cities. Loveridge and his delegation also represented the state government of California. This relationship was solidified last year, when the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management and the Federal State of California, under the leadership of Governor Schwarzenegger, signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in the fields of environmental protection and technology.

ENVIETECH 2010, held on even years since 2008, made Vienna the European stage of environmental protection and renewable energy for two days with presentations and discussions of the most recent technologies and solutions. This large-scale event is held under the Ministry’s auspices and was opened by the Minister for the Environment Niki Berlakovich. Remarks followed by prominent speakers, such as Vienna Director of Urban Planning Brigitte Jilka and Vice President of the Upper Austrian Economic Chamber Ulrike Rabmer-Koller. Robert Visser, Acting Director of the OECD Directorate General for Environment, emphasized the international importance of envietech 2010.

Subsequently, four forums were held focusing on “Environmental Technology,” “Renewable Energy,” “Waste and Water Management” and “Financing of New Sustainable Technologies”, with over 35 international experts simultaneously discussing new challenges and introducing new opportunities. Nabih Tahan from Bautechnologies in California presented an overview of the challenges U.S. cities face to the European audience. His panel was moderated by the Austrian Trade Commissioner in Chicago Franz Roessler.

At the accompanying exhibition, Austrian and international companies presented the most recent solutions for urban and environmental issues. Another highlight of envietech 2010 was the awarding of the Austrian State Prize for Environmental and Energy Technology.

Envietech is jointly organized by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management, ACV, ECO World Styria, ÖGUT –Austrian Society for Environment and Technology, the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO); Umwelttechnik Cluster, ACT Austrian Clean Technology and the City of Vienna.
