Energy Globe Award 2013

May 17, 2013

Award Ceremony in the premises of the Austrian Trade Commission in New York

The Austrian Trade Commissioner in New York, Mr. Christian Kesberg, awarded the National Energy Globe Award to Ezili Danto on May 14th 2013 in the premises of the Austrian Trade Commission in New York. Mr. Dr. Christian Kesberg and his team congratulated Ezili Danto on behalf of the Federal Austrian Chamber of Commerce.

The winning project Zili Dlo – Renewable Energy and Clean Water For Haiti was awarded with the annual National Energy Globe Award for Haiti.

The organization Zili Dlo wants to de-mystify green energy and provide access to renewable energy, clean water and sanitary installations to the impoverished rural population. This project has given women with little or no education the opportunity to operate a high-tech solar powered water filter unit, MaxPure01. They were also taught how to collect rain water from their roofs. Zili Dlo made it possible for four rural women to attend the Barefoot College in India, where they underwent practical technical training in the production, installation, operation and maintenance of solar cells. These women can provide remote maintenance to villages in Haiti and manage the energy supply of the local centres.

Zili Dlo supported them by arranging the necessary training and thus helps create sustainable jobs for women in Haiti. Ezili Dantò was born in Haiti and with this project she wants to give back to her ancestors. Clean water means life and health, which are very important to keep the cholera at bay. The most difficult part of the project’s implementation was raising finance. Hurricanes, flooded streets and power cuts all caused delays. But in the end it was possible to train the women in India. They all obtained the necessary official permits, health insurance and transit visas.

Ezili wants to raise more finance in order to expand the water project further. She wants to buy a water transporter to be able to bring clean water to different areas. At present, the solar powered water filter unit operates in Port-au-Prince and supplies two rural communities. Thanks to the commitment shown by the community and a well-functioning distribution, everything has gone smoothly. The four Zili Dlo solar women manage the energy supply centre and the equipment. In the meantime, Zili Dlo has also sponsored two solar street lamps. They have a connector station with eight connections, which the solar women can use to earn income.
