This was Austria Connect 2013

October 1, 2013

The “Who’s Who” of the Austrian Business Community met at AUSTRIA CONNECT 2013 in Los Angeles

Participants benefited from presentations and networking on “Technology & the Enterprise”

On September 26 & 27 the executives of Austrian subsidiaries in the USA together with trusted service providers met at AUSTRIA CONNECT, the „6th Annual Conference for Executives of Austrian Subsidiaries in the United States.” Not only the managing directors of large, well-established subsidiaries of Austrian firms/investors were in attendance, but also many newcomers and Austrian “US start ups.”

This year’s annual get-together of the Austrian business community was held on the West Coast for the first time. Despite the long trip to Los Angeles for many, the conference was completely booked with 90 participants. As is customary, the morning focus was an overview of current economic developments, with an emphasis on the mid- and long term effects of newly tapped oil and gas reserves and US price advantages in the energy sector. The topic was covered by Dr. Keith Crane, the “energy economist” at the Rand Corporation, whose conference room in Santa Monica was the venue for this year’s AUSTRIA CONNECT. Afternoon sessions were devoted to technology and innovation. Dr. Chui from the McKinsey Global Institute presented an overview of twelve “disruptive technologies,” which McKinsey claims have the potential to fundamentally transform the global economy. The program ended with an impressive presentation by the Director of the Stanford University Innovation Center. Dr. Dasher described examples in the Silicon Valley of how companies can generate significant and profitable technological innovations and what others can learn from them.

As always, not only “learning,” but also “sharing” were strengths of the AUSTRIA CONNECT meeting. The conference luncheon contributed to this atmosphere as well as a welcome cocktail reception the prior evening and a sizable networking event at the legendary Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica at the close of the program. The question remained whether picture postcard sunsets were better enjoyed with Riesling or Blaufränkisch, but as always, the repeat visitors agreed the best AUSTRIA CONNECT was the one that just wrapped up.

The Austrian Trade Commission in Los Angeles was the lead ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA office responsible for the preparations. AUSTRIA CONNECT No. 6 was made possible by the generous support of Arnall Golden Gregory, Bank Austria / Unicredit, Erste, Fredericks & von der Horst, DB Schenker, Hörbiger, Plansee, RB International Finance USA and Wolfsdorf Immigration Law Corp and in cooperation with the Rand Corporation. AUSTRIA CONNECT was co-financed with funds from GO INTERNATIONAL, a shared initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.
Over 90 Austrian Companies and Sponsors made this year's Austria Connect a complete success. We want to thank all participants and contributors for a great couple of days!
